It was a fun project to do and I’ll be trying more cane style projects in the future. The cane is pretty lightweight and durable. It is made out of Aspen and I have since sealed it for better protection from the elements. I glued a piece of leather to the top of the cane and burned my initials into it. I also carved the four “black squares” into it at this time.

I added the red colored wood as an after thought for decoration. So I cut a piece of wood off of a different branch, bored it out, and glued it on to the top. I added a “head” to the cane due to the circumference at the top was too small and would actually cause my hand to twitch when I would tap the cane on the ground. I need to work on my technique to get it proper but I am happy with my first attempt This particular design a snake wrapped around a Sassafras twistie stick is a beginner’s level project, but I think that even the advanced carvers here may discover a few fun tricks and tips. I know that my knot isn’t a true Celtic Knot, but more of a variation. Walking stick carving is often one of the first carving projects a new wood carver tries. My first attempt I messed up real bad as far as carving it, but after I sanded it out the second attempt is what you see in the pictures below. And after i figured out how to draw one I put it down on graph paper and cut out the pattern.

I have always liked them and it proved to be a pretty fast project once I decided what I wanted to do with it. The idea for this project came to me one day while working on a different project, when I decided to make a walking cane out of the blue.
